but what exactly happens? And does it feel great? 
What areas would they target for a swimmer?
If you have never had a massage before, I hope the therapist will tread carefully. Deep tissue for someone who has not introduced to massage can be quite painful. You should remember to breathe deeply to help relax the muscles, and DON’T be shy about speaking up if the pressure is uncomfortable! It’s your massage; you should help the therapist give you the massage you want. 
In general, deep massage uses medium to firm pressure to contact the deeper layers of muscle in the body. It can be uncomfortable at times, but should not be outright painful. You should drink a lot of water that day to reduce soreness from the massage and get the maximum benefit. You may be sore for a day or two afterward, but you should also feel relaxed and more flexible.
