Is it okay to be rude to an elderly person if they are rude to you?

The receptionist at my job is pushing 60 yrs old and has been with the company for close to 10 yrs. She is quite rude to everyone except the people who “do favors for her” i.e. bring her food, give her candy, rub her back. Normally I wouldn’t bother myself with someone like this but because of my position at the company I have to work closely with her. My whole life people have said “respect your elders” but how do you handle it when you think your elder doesn’t deserve it? What’s your opinion on a situation like this?
