Therapeutic Massage Therapists

Massage therapists especially — I have a gratuity question…?

Situation A) You go to a spa-type facility where you get an hour-long relaxation massage. No muscle injuries are worked on, no therapy is given – just a nice Swedish massage.

Situation B) You go to a healing center (where chiropractors, therapists, and other health providers work) to receive a Therapeutic Massage on a chronic muscle problem/trigger point.

My Question: I would definitely tip the masseuse in situation A, as it is a totally beauty/relaxation type situation. But i’m confused as to whether or not I should tip the therapist. I don’t tip my doctor when i go see her, so should i tip the therapist who helps me regain shoulder movement? I don’t mean to seem rude or ungracious, as I appreciate her more than any other service provider, I’m just curious. Any thoughts from people within the business? I’m especially eager to hear from people who give massages and are “in the business.” Thanks!

I am a massage therapist as are many of my friends. I work in the spa setting and I have a friend who works in the chiropractic setting. She rarely receives tips from her clients. But really, tipping is a personal decision. If you feel like he/she really did help you, and you can afford to tip them…it is always greatly appreciated.
