Back Massage With Tennis Ball

Self Massage Tips to Complement Massage Therapy from a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT)
Even if you are undergoing regular massage therapy from a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT), you can complement it with self massage techniques you can do every day upon waking or after work. Like regular daily exercise it can help you get ready for your day or wind down after a long day. It will also tide you over until your next session with your massage therapist.
Upon waking and before sleeping, you can rev up your circulation by gently thumping or squeezing from your feet up to your thighs and buttocks, and from your hands up to your armpits. This movement is towards the direction of your heart. After doing both arms, cross your arms in front of your chest to hold on to the opposite shoulder. Squeeze and release your shoulders three times to ease shoulder tension.
When doing your self massage at night, you can use relaxing aromatherapy oils like lavender. This will further relax you and help you get a good sleep while moisturizing your skin.
Tennis balls are very useful tools for self massage. You can use them for the spots in your back and buttocks that are hard to reach. Put the tennis ball on a firm mattress bed and lie on it, making sure to position it where you need the most pressure. You can use it between your shoulder blades, on your lower back and on your buttocks.
You could also use the tennis balls to massage the soles of your feet. While standing barefoot, support yourself with one hand on a wall or any piece of sturdy furniture. Put the tennis ball under one foot and roll it around with your weight on it, allowing it to press into your arch, heel and the ball of your foot as well as the undersides of your toes. Do this for each foot.
Your hands contain reflexology points. Even if you are not a reflexology practitioner, you can massage your hands and stimulate those points. You can use your thumbs or your knuckles to press and rub your palms in circular motions. Use your thumbs and forefingers to pinch and knead the web between your fingers. Gently pull on each of your fingers and knead them from base to tips. Take note of sore spots and report them to your massage therapist on your next visit, especially if he or she is a reflexology practitioner.
You can repeat your hand massage throughout the day, this time by squeezing on a golf ball. An alternative would be the ever popular stress balls that are more giving.
You can also massage your scalp by making a fist in your hair and gently pulling the hair away from your head. Do this on all parts of your head to stretch the fascia under your scalp. This also helps with headaches.
After each meal, do what instinct often urges us to do – rub your tummy. Do it in a clockwise motion, in the same direction as digestion. This will help your digestive system.
After working on the computer or doing paperwork or reading for several hours, give your eyes a break. You can rub your palms together to generate heat and then cup them around each eye to soothe tiredness.
Self massage may provide you with some comfort at home but there is still no replacement for complete massage therapy from a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) who can offer shiatsu, acupressure, reflexology, craniosacral massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, sports massage therapy and pregnancy massage therapy. A Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) not only provides treatment but also does insurance billing for people in auto accidents.
