According to Girish, Thai yoga massage therapy originated in the Buddhist temples of ancient India. Thai yoga massage is built on the theoretical principles and philosophy of prana – the vital life energy that flows through the body through energy meridians. The network of energy meridians is called prana nadis. This is the network through which our bodies distribute life giving prana which we absorb from the air and from our food. Thai yoga massage is believed to release muscle tension, open up energy channels in the body and restore balance to the flow of energy. It is also said to enhance one’s self awareness and encourage deeper levels of consciousness. Practitioners of Thai yoga massage, in fact, claim that it can release and clear up unresolved feelings and emotions by balancing the breath, engaging the muscles and stretching. This is based on the yoga principle that thoughts and feelings are integrated with the body.

During Thai yoga massage therapy, Girish says, the client is fully clothed, preferably in comfortable loose clothing, and lies on a futon. The therapist does not use any oils or creams. The atmosphere may be enhanced with the use of muted lights and soft relaxing music. The entire massage session can last for an hour to an hour and a half.

Girish talked to Kimberly Call, a Thai yoga massage therapist, who says the use of the futon on the floor gives the therapist greater leverage in working with a client and allows for more body dynamics. In doing the stretches and postures, she says, “The client can be prone, supine, on the side or seated. There is a wonderful and diverse repertoire a practitioner can draw from. The rocking helps gradually open and relax; the stretching exercises nerves and meridians; and the acupressure tones. What’s best is Thai yoga massage works with each individual’s condition and capacities and aims to improve [them].”

Another Thai yoga massage therapist, Caroline Walden, is quoted by Girish as saying, “The client’s focus is on breath and relaxation of the mind. I work with the rhythm of the client’s breath and create a connection and a therapeutic dance on the body, which in turn is very meditative for me. The client and I both feed off each other’s energy. I feel the sedating effects of the massage and am very relaxed after a session.”
