Massage Therapy Business Plans

Spa owning and college?

I am about to go to college in the fall of 2007. My plans are to own my own day spa and I also want to do the Massage Therapy in my business. Should I major in Business Administration or massage therapy. I really want to major in business, but is there a way that i can take massage therapy now even though i am only 18, and finish the course before i go to college?

Thinks about the massage therapy part. I sell cosmetic lasers, which is the most profitable part of “medi-spas”. There is a lot of competition in this industry, and I always discourage customers from using square footage for massage, because it isn’t near as profitable. Before you decide that massage therapy is the backbone of your spa, I would visit a spa or two in your area and see if you could talk to the owner and ask advice about what might be the best way to set up a spa and what is the most profitable aspect by dollars per hour or dollars per square foot devoted to a certain procedure customers pay for. The owner may be leary if they view you as competition, or they may see you as a fresh-faced student that they’d be happy to give advice to. Another good way would be to get employment part-time during school (for business) as a receptionist or whatever in a spa so you can see how they run it, promote different procedures and to find out what is most profitable. It doesn’t matter if you are a fully trained masseuse if you are investing in a spa in an industry where perhaps microdermabrasion or chemical peels is what customers are looking for. Good luck!
