Therapeutic Massage in Lawrenceville, Gwinnette and Sugarloaf GA, or LomiLomi in Hawaii
It is called therapeutic massage in Lawrenceville, Gwinnette and Sugarloaf GA, but traditionally called LomiLomi in Hawaii.
LomiLomi is also the Hawaiian word for masseur or masseuse. Lomi in Hawaiian means “to rub, press, squeeze, massage.” This traditional Hawaiian massage uses the palms, fingers, knuckles, elbows, forearms, feet and even knees. Sticks and stones are also used.
Native healers use LomiLomi in their practice. It is considered a luxury enjoyed by high chiefs, but is also performed within families. It is part of traditional Hawaiian martial arts, as well.
LomiLomi is based on the Hawaiian philosophy of Huna which believes that everything seeks harmony and love. Love in the Hawaiian context encompasses acceptance, compassion, non judgment, forgiveness, appreciation, tolerance and respect, among others. LomiLomi is, therefore, also called Loving Hands massage.
The lack of harmony is said to bring physical, mental, emotional and spiritual pain. During illness, the body is believed to be in a state of tension and resistance, blocking the flow of energy throughout the body. The LomiLomi practitioner focuses deeply and completely on the client with a loving heart and uses loving hands to release tension and resistance and facilitate physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing.
Negative ideas, beliefs and patterns of behavior are said to have the ability to block natural energy flow in the body, much like muscle tension. These ideas and beliefs are also said to be contained in all the cells of the body. LomiLomi, therefore, releases these blockages and gives the energy flow new momentum. It assists the body in letting go of those negative ideas, beliefs and behavioral patterns.
There is no definite set of massage strokes or sequence of strokes for traditional LomiLomi massage because a practitioner uses intuition in working with a client. It could be very slow and relaxing, or it could be more energizing and invigorating. The experience will always be different.
A session starts with a moment of stillness when the practitioner lays hands on the client and says a blessing that invokes the healing being asked for. The massage is then given, using rhythmic strokes that are long and fluid over and under the body. The body is also gently stretched and the joints are carefully rotated, always adjusting to the level of the client’s comfort.
A unique feature of traditional LomiLomi massage is the massaging of two different body parts at the same time. The practitioner may, for example, be massaging the client’s shoulder with one hand and the opposite hip with the other. Again, the practitioner chooses the next area to massage, or the areas to be massaged at the same time, by intuition. The lack of structure also helps the client to totally let go and just feel instead of logically thinking through the massage process.
Sometimes, more than one practitioner will work on the client. With four hands massaging four separate body parts, not necessarily symmetrical, the client’s brain cannot focus and will blissfully surrender.
Another distinctive feature of the traditional LomiLomi massage is the practitioner’s humming at some points of the massage. The vibration of the sound is believed to amplify energy and aid in releasing blockages.
Dance and breathing practices are also integrated by LomiLomi practitioners in each session. They do hula movements and special breathing techniques to further heighten energy flow.
